Volunteer on board Massey Shaw

The Trust has a small number of dedicated volunteers who are regularly on board and attending events on behalf of the Society to maintain Massey and promote the Trust to raise funds.

There are volunteering opportunities for all ages on board or on shore! We are always looking for volunteers to commit time wherever possible to help maintain, crew and help our education/archive projects.

Visit our event calendar for details of our next volunteer event.

Ways to volunteer

We have a number of volunteer roles within the Trust and all come with required training so there are no prior skills or qualifications needed to help!

In order promote Massey and its unique history, the Society will seek to attend events throughout the year. However, in order to get there we require trained crew members to meet current regulations for river travel.

Although boating experience or qualifications are a useful starting point, Massey Shaw is completely unique in it's operation so training will be provided for all crew members.

We run regular crew training events throughout the year in association with the Marine Volunteers Service (MVS).

If you're interested in finding out more please contact us.

Handy with a paint brush? We have a number of general tasks, cleaning, maintenance and more things to do on board.

A deck hand may also be asked to attend events with Massey Shaw to aid crew members prepare and set up the vessel.

This role is vital in ensuring we are able to attend events, show people around and keep Massey in tip top condition all year round.

If you would like more information please contact us.

Do you enjoy talking to people?

To promote and fundraise for the Trust we attend a number of public events and tours on board are a great way to educate people in the unique story of Massey Shaw.

We have an engaging and unique experience to share and as a volunteer tour guide you will be showing people around and exploring the diverse history behind London's unsung hero of the Thames.

To find out more about becoming a tour guide please fill out our contact form.

An engineering background will help prepare you for the training, but with two Glennifer engines and a range of fire pumps on board 'on the job' training will be provided.

Massey Shaw offers a completely unique set of challenges (and rewards!) as an engineer. If you enjoy fixing things and big engines then become an engineer on Massey.
